Why Betty Orengo’s Speech During Rachel Ruto’s Siaya Visit Is Trending Online

Betty, who serves as the First Lady of Siaya County, welcomed Rachel during the Joyful Women Organisation (JOYWO) engagement held in the county on Tuesday, September 8.

The event brought together women’s groups, county officials and senior government representatives for discussions around savings, entrepreneurship and economic empowerment.

Speaking from behind a clear podium decorated with flowers, Betty addressed the gathering with a steady delivery as she welcomed Rachel and other guests.

She noted that Siaya already had numerous women’s groups involved in financial literacy and other community initiatives.

Betty also highlighted the county assembly’s women’s caucus, chaired by Siaya MCA Mercedes Madowo.

She encouraged the caucus and county coordinators to register with JOYWO and make use of the opportunities available through the organisation.

“I appreciate, and I’m sure we all appreciate, the tenets that Joyful Women operate on.”

Betty further praised JOYWO for recognising the knowledge and abilities of women at grassroots level.

“Respecting the indigenous knowledge of the women on the ground, their resourcefulness, and also their own ability to choose what it is that they would focus on.”

Her remarks were met with attention online, with viewers praising her composure and command of the gathering.

Representing her husband, Governor James Orengo, Betty extended a warm welcome to Rachel Ruto and a line-up of dignitaries that included CS OPC Wandae, Dr Oluga as PS for Health, County Assembly Speaker Christine Ombaka, and various Members of the County Assembly.

She spoke about the significance of the Joyful Women programme arriving in Siaya, noting that the county is home to numerous women’s groups already organised around financial literacy and combating what she called “the triple threat.”
