Countries That Hold the Most Reserves in Gold

Global central banks continue to anchor their reserves in gold, with the United States leading the world at 8,133 tonnes—representing 82% of its total foreign reserves.

Germany follows closely with 3,350 tonnes (82%), while Italy and France hold 2,452 tonnes (79%) and 2,437 tonnes (80%), respectively.

Emerging economies also maintain sizeable reserves, including China with 2,306 tonnes (9%) and Saudi Arabia with 1,040 tonnes (14%).

Intriguingly, while Canada stands among the world’s top five gold producers, it sold off its last remaining official bullion reserves in 2016, choosing to diversify into foreign currency assets instead.
