Gor Mahia, Tusker set for high-stakes Super Cup clash

Gor Mahia and Tusker FC face an early test of their ambitions when they meet in the FKF Super Cup on Sunday.

The 3 pm contest at Nyayo Stadium will see the 2025/26 SportPesa League champions take on the 2026 Mozzart Bet Cup winners with the first trophy of the season at stake.

The Super Cup comes after a stirring Kagame Cup journey for Gor Mahia, whose march to the final ended in extra-time agony as Rayon Sports edged them 2-1.

Head coach Charles Akonnor believes the demanding run has sharpened his side ahead of the battle with Tusker. “I am very delighted that the CECAFA Kagame Cup comes at such a time because it will give the team good preparations ahead of the new season,” Akonnor said, underlining the value of facing strong opposition before the domestic campaign begins.

The experience allowed Akonnor to assess his recruits, experiment with combinations and identify weaknesses.

Gor Mahia kept their pre-season momentum rolling over the weekend, surviving a tense penalty shootout against newly promoted Migori Youth after the two sides battled to a 2-2 draw in regulation time. The champions, however, have entered the final stages of their preparations with several injury concerns.

Newly appointed captain Sylvester Owino is nursing a calf problem, while Samuel Kapen is facing a lengthy absence after suffering an ACL injury. Felix Oluoch and Patrick Essombe are also undergoing rehabilitation.

Akonnor has consequently been forced to examine his defensive options, with Frank Odhiambo and vice-captain Michael Kibwage expected to shoulder greater responsibility as the club seeks stability at the back.

The coach has also had to contend with the departure of Harambee Stars defender Siraj Mohammed, who crossed the divide to join Tusker after returning from a loan spell at KCB.

“He just has to be serious in training and do the right thing,” Akonnor said of the competition for places, making it clear that no player can expect guaranteed minutes at Gor Mahia.

The move has added another intriguing subplot to Sunday’s contest, with Siraj potentially facing his former teammates only days after completing his switch to the Brewers.

Akonnor, however, insists there is no bitterness surrounding the transfer and said he respected the defender’s decision to seek a new challenge.

“When he felt he wanted to leave, I couldn’t stand in his way. I want to clarify that I don’t have any issue with any player and I don’t intend to do so,” he said.

Tusker arrive at Nyayo with their own ambitions after winning the Mozzart Bet Cup and undergoing a significant rebuilding exercise under French coach Julien Mette.

The Brewers have recruited Siraj, striker Eric Kapaito, winger Yakeen Muteheli, right-back Eugene Ikutwa and midfielder Chrispinus Otieno, while releasing nine players as Mette attempts to create a squad capable of competing domestically and in the CAF Confederation Cup.

“We need to build a stronger and deeper squad if we want to compete with Africa’s top clubs,” Mette said, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing the Brewers.

Tusker’s pre-season was less convincing in terms of results, with the club exiting the CECAFA Kagame Cup at the group stage without a win. Mette, however, believes the difficult matches provided precisely the type of examination his players required.

“I urge patience following our early exit because the tournament has fulfilled its primary objective of preparing the team,” Mette said, insisting that results alone should not determine the value of their preparations.

The Super Cup now presents Tusker with an opportunity to measure their progress against the reigning league champions before the competitive season gathers pace.

Mette has placed particular emphasis on tactical discipline and integrating his new signings, with the Frenchman keen to ensure the team develops a clear identity before facing the demands of domestic and continental football.

“If I am looking forward to the future. I know this was the type of game we need for our pre-season to be alert and see what the reality is in the CAF Confederation Cup,” he said.

For Akonnor, Sunday’s encounter is equally important as Gor Mahia prepare for their CAF Champions League preliminary-round tie against Egyptian giants Pyramids FC in September.

The Ghanaian coach has urged his players to approach the continental challenge without fear, believing preparation and mentality can bridge the gap in reputation and resources.

“Everything is possible,” Akonnor said of the Pyramids challenge, a philosophy that will also shape Gor’s approach against Tusker.

With both clubs still fine-tuning their squads, the Super Cup offers the perfect final examination before the 2026/27 Premier League campaign kicks off on August 29.

Akonnor believes Gor must be mentally ready for the demands ahead, while Mette sees Sunday’s contest as another opportunity to test his rebuilding project against one of Kenya’s strongest sides.

“We want to use these big matches to understand where we are and what we still need to improve,” Mette said, setting the stage for a contest in which the trophy will matter, but the lessons may prove even more valuable.

Gor Mahia will then turn their attention to their continental assignment. At the same time, Tusker prepare for their CAF Confederation Cup campaign, ensuring that Sunday’s Super Cup will serve as both a trophy contest and a final rehearsal for two clubs carrying major ambitions into the new season.
