Owalo believes Gor Mahia’s enormous following could become the club’s biggest financial asset if supporters move beyond cheering the team from the stands and play a more active role in its financial growth.
Owalo said reaching the one-million-member mark would significantly strengthen the club’s finances and reduce its reliance on sponsors.
“If we can have fully registered members clocking at least one million, we can do a lot on our own without including sponsorships,” Owalo said.
Despite attracting several corporate partners, Owalo wants Gor Mahia to develop a supporter-driven economic model that would reduce the club’s dependence on sponsorships and other external sources of funding.
“I really want to ask Gor Mahia fans to register as members of the club so that we can think together as members of the ‘Kogalo’ family. We need to move away from the welfare approach to a corporate mentality,” he said.
The push comes as the club explores ways to diversify its revenue streams. Gor Mahia recently secured a three-year sponsorship deal worth KSh30 million with Kansai Plascon, while its partnership with electric mobility company Spiro is worth KSh7.5 million annually.
If achieved, the proposed one-million-member base could provide a significant and more predictable source of revenue through membership subscriptions, merchandise sales and other supporter-driven initiatives.
The proposal is part of the club’s broader efforts to turn its huge following into an organised financial network capable of supporting its long-term ambitions.
The initiative comes at an important time for the record Kenyan champions, who recently secured their 22nd league title and are preparing for another demanding campaign that will include continental football.
