GT Bank managing director to exit as banking sector executive shake-up continues

Guaranty Trust Bank (Kenya) has announced that its Managing Director, Jubril Adeniji, will step down after the expiry of his tenure, marking the latest executive reshuffle in Kenya’s banking industry amid a broader wave of leadership changes across the sector.

The lender said Adeniji has been recalled to parent company Guaranty Trust Bank Limited in Nigeria, where he will take up a new assignment within the GTCO Group.

To ensure a smooth transition, Adeniji will remain in office for the next 90 days while the bank completes the handover process and seeks regulatory approvals for the appointment of a new Managing Director.

In a statement, the bank said the outgoing chief executive had overseen significant changes during his tenure, including strengthening the bank’s governance and shareholding structure, improving the quality of its loan portfolio, enhancing internal controls and implementing a strategic growth plan aimed at expanding its market share.

The lender also said Adeniji had played a key role in strengthening the bank’s leadership team and workforce to support its long-term growth ambitions.

“The Board extends its sincere appreciation to Adeniji for his contribution, leadership and dedicated service to GTBank Kenya during his tenure,” the bank said in a statement.

It added that operations would continue uninterrupted during the transition, assuring customers, employees, regulators and shareholders that the bank remains financially stable and committed to delivering banking services.

The leadership change comes as Kenya’s banking industry experiences heightened executive movement, with several lenders reshuffling top management as they position themselves for the next phase of growth amid rising competition and ongoing regional expansion.

Last month, I&M Bank Kenya appointed former Absa Bank Kenya chief executive Abdi Mohamed as its new Chief Executive Officer, subject to regulatory approval, following his departure from Absa after more than three decades with the lender.

Absa Bank Kenya also named its Chief Financial Officer Yusuf Omari as interim Managing Director and Chief Executive following Mohamed’s exit.

The executive changes come at a time when Kenya’s banking sector is attracting increased regional investor interest, with African lenders expanding their presence in the country’s profitable banking market even as competition intensifies among established local institutions.
