EU summons Burkina Faso envoy over diplomat expulsions

The EU on Thursday summoned Burkina Faso’s ambassador over the “unjustified” decision to expel two of its diplomats from the West African country.

“The EU strongly protests Burkina Faso’s unjustified decision to expel two diplomats from the EU delegation, for which we have received no explanation,” spokeswoman Anitta Hipper posted online.

“The ambassador has been summoned, and retaliatory measures will follow.”

The move targeting the EU representation comes after Burkina Faso’s ruling junta in June severed diplomatic ties with former colonial ruler France.

Paris in response this month pulled all its diplomats from the country.

Junta chief captain Ibrahim Traore has pursued anti-Western policies since seizing power in 2022, while critical voices are met with repression.

The authorities summoned the EU ambassador last month over a European Parliament resolution and remarks by a French MEP criticising the “failure” of the junta
