Tech billionaire Mark Zuckerberg is expanding his horizons far beyond the digital metaverse, setting his sights on a brand new, highly meticulous passion project located on his sprawling Hawaii estate. Source: Facebook The Meta Platforms Chief Executive Officer revealed that he has embarked on a mission to create some of the highest-quality beef in the entire world, utilising an unconventional and surprisingly decadent diet for his livestock. Speaking in a recently shared clip from the Idea Generation series, Zuckerberg detailed the intricate agricultural operation he has set up on his ranch.
Why is Mark Zuckerberg feeding his cows beer? The tech mogul explained that the core philosophy behind his cattle-raising strategy revolves around maximising nutritional and caloric density. By optimizing what the animals ingest, he hopes to produce unparalleled flavor and tenderness in the beef. To achieve this goal, Zuckerberg turned to a staple crop of the Hawaiian islands: macadamia nuts. He noted that macadamia trees are now being grown directly on his property specifically to feed the herd. “On the ranch, one of my projects is I am trying to create the highest quality beef in the world. How do you make it so that you can deliver the highest density diet to them? We started growing macadamia trees because that kind of nut is extremely dense. They will eat a lot so they will put on weight and become fat quicker and become delicious,” he said. However, the process is far from simple, requiring the same kind of engineering mindset that Zuckerberg applied to building global social networks.
Because of the high oil content in macadamia nuts, the raw product cannot simply be tossed into the feeding troughs. The tech billionaire revealed that his team had to design an entire custom process from scratch just to roast the nuts properly so they are digestible for the cattle. “It is alright, the macadamia nuts have a lot of oil, so you need to actually roast that. so now we need to design this whole process to like roast the nuts. So that way you can give them to the cows. But you want them to eat more, how do you get them to more? Well turns out alcohol is great. Alcohol induces appetite, that is actually why high-end beef they are fed beer. Okay what’s the right balance of beer versus water? It is like, I don’t know, let’s let them choose. They can get as much cold beer as they want or as much room temperature water. And they can kinda balance that,” he added. He noted that this appetite-stimulation technique is actually the secret behind some of the world’s most famous and expensive variations of high-end beef, where cattle are traditionally given beer to complement their regular feed. “So now we are brewing all this beer and we are putting it all out and I am never gonna stop,” he further said.
