Should Summer Tides Be Banned? Geoffrey Mosiria Weighs In

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria has called for the Summer Tides event in Malindi to be banned following the circulation of videos and photos on social media allegedly showing revellers engaging in indecent activity in public.

The outspoken county official shared his views on Instagram, saying the country should not ignore what he described as a worrying moral and public health issue.

“Summer Tides should be banned completely in Kenya. How can our young people openly engage in sexual acts in public spaces, and nobody is talking about it?” Mosiria wrote.

He questioned whether society was doing enough to protect young people and urged parents to pay closer attention to where their children spend their weekends.

According to Mosiria, parents should know the whereabouts of their sons and daughters before sending them money for leisure activities.

Calls for investigation

Mosiria said the videos circulating online from Malindi were disturbing if authentic and should be investigated by the relevant authorities.

He claimed the footage appeared to show young men and women engaging in unprotected sexual activity in public, with some clips allegedly depicting one woman involved with multiple men.

“If the videos are authentic, they should be investigated by the relevant authorities,” he said

He added that protecting young people requires a collective effort and called on society to uphold public decency and values that safeguard health, dignity and the future of the younger generation.

Mixed reactions online

Mosiria’s remarks quickly sparked debate, with supporters praising him for speaking out while others questioned why a Nairobi County official was commenting on events in Kilifi County.

Public debate continues
