DAN, IMO No. 8415160, as efforts to refloat it heat up. “Following the grounding, the Authority, in collaboration with other Government agencies, has maintained close oversight of the situation to ensure the safety of navigation, protection of the marine environment, and the welfare of the crew on board,” the statement read in part.
What did govt say about ship stuck at Nyali Beach? During the exercise, KMA revealed that it assessed the ship’s structural condition and the potential risk posed to the marine environment. The result was that its hull integrity remains intact, with no evidence of structural failure or leakage, according to KMA, meaning that the likelihood of a pollution incident is currently assessed to be minimal. Despite these positive indicators, however, the authority relayed that precautionary measures would remain in place and the situation would continue to be closely monitored. Other agencies, including the Kenya Coast Guard Service, the Kenya Navy, and the Kenya Ports Authority, are assisting in the monitoring exercise. Most crucial is the Kenya Coast Guard Service, which has reportedly maintained round-the-clock security and surveillance of the vessel to ensure the safety of the crew, prevent unauthorised access, and facilitate rapid response should the need arise. According to KMA, the owners of the vessel SLA Maritime Co. S.A have been cooperative during the entire process and are committed to refloating it.
However, this refloating process will need to wait a few more weeks as the authority relayed that the prospective date for the exercise is July 13, which is when the next favourable tide period is expected. “Preparations for the refloating operation are currently underway, with plans being finalised to take advantage of the next favourable spring tide period expected on or about 13th July 2026,” KMA stated. “The vessel owners are working to mobilise the necessary equipment and resources required to safely execute the operation.” As such, the authority assured the public and all maritime stakeholders that the situation remains under control and that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard the safety of navigation, the marine environment and the crew’s welfare.
