One of the standout matches of the tournament so far delivered drama, quality, and six goals as England opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia in Boston.
In a contest that showcased two talented sides at their attacking best, England avenged their painful 2018 World Cup semi-final defeat, with Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham inspiring Thomas Tuchel’s men to a memorable win.
Kane was the driving force behind England’s first-half dominance, scoring twice while also demonstrating the intelligent link-up play that has made him one of the finest forwards of his generation. Despite Croatia’s determined resistance, the Three Lions ultimately proved too powerful in attack.
The England captain had an early setback when Dominik Livakovic saved his penalty, but the Croatian goalkeeper was adjudged to have moved illegally off his line. Given a second opportunity, Kane made no mistake, calmly converting to hand England the lead.
Croatia responded impressively. Martin Baturina levelled the score with a fierce strike from the edge of the area that left Jordan Pickford with little chance, highlighting the resilience that has long defined the Croatian national team.
England regained the advantage through a brilliantly executed set-piece. Declan Rice delivered an inviting corner from the right, and an unmarked Kane rose highest to power a magnificent header into the net for his second goal of the evening.
Yet Croatia refused to fade away. Moments before halftime, Petar Musa completed a slick attacking move to make it 2-2, ensuring the teams headed into the break level after an enthralling opening 45 minutes.
With the match delicately poised, England emerged from the interval with renewed intensity.
Just two minutes into the second half, Jude Bellingham announced himself in spectacular fashion. Elliot Anderson split Croatia’s defence with a sensational pass, allowing the Real Madrid midfielder to surge forward and finish confidently into the far corner to restore England’s lead.
This time, Croatia struggled to find a response.
Although Livakovic produced a string of outstanding saves to deny Rice, Ezri Konsa, and Kane, England continued to create chances with relentless pressure and fluid attacking football.
The decisive blow eventually arrived through Marcus Rashford, who capped off a superb team performance with a composed finish to make it 4-2 and seal all three points.
While Croatia showed admirable fighting spirit by twice coming from behind, England’s attacking quality ultimately proved decisive. Kane’s brilliance, Bellingham’s influence, and the depth of Tuchel’s forward line offered an early statement of intent from one of the tournament favourites.
If this thrilling encounter is any indication, England’s World Cup journey promises to be one worth watching.
