Kenyan actress Jackie Matubia has sparked a lively debate online regarding child discipline and competitive sports. The conversation began after she shared a glimpse into the rigorous morning routine of her 10-year-old daughter, Zari.
While most children of that age are still fast asleep, Zari is already at the pool. Her mother revealed that the youngster starts her swimming training at 5 am. Matubia took to her Instagram stories to praise the child’s dedication, stating that Zari is already teaching adults what discipline looks like.
The 5 AM Discipline
The actress described her daughter as heading to training with so much focus and quiet determination. This early start is part of a demanding schedule designed to hone Zari’s skills in the water.
“At just 10, Zari is already teaching us what discipline looks like. While most of us are still asleep, she’s up at 5 a.m., heading to training with so much focus and quiet determination. To know Zari si to know hard work and a future champion in the making,” she captioned.

Matubia noted that the young athlete possesses a level of drive that stands out, even when the rest of the world is still quiet.
However, the post quickly drew a mixed reaction from her followers. Some social media users expressed concern over the intensity of the schedule for a 10-year-old.
Responding to the ‘Parenting Experts’
Matubia did not shy away from the criticism. She posted a follow-up message addressed directly to the “parenting experts” arriving in her DMs. She asked them to “save your concerns” regarding Zari swimming in cold water at such an early hour.
“Before the parenting experts arrive in my DM… 😅🫣 Please save your concerns about my child swimming at 5 a.m. in cold water…. She is not complaining. She loves what she does.”
The actress was firm in her defence of the routine. She explained that Zari is not complaining about the early starts.
Matubia also addressed the specific worry about the temperature of the water.she clarified that once a swimmer is in the water and training, the body warms up very quickly. For the actress, the physical challenge is a necessary part of the path to success.
Supporting a Dream
For Matubia, the focus remains on her daughter’s personal goals rather than public opinion. She emphasised that swimming is Zari’s passion, her choice, and her journey.
She believes that as a parent, her primary role is to provide a support system for these ambitions.

“My job is to support her dreams, not limit them because they’re uncomfortableto other people.“She concluded her message by suggesting that those outside the world of competitive training might struggle to understand the mindset required.
