The Matchday Crystal Ball: World Cup stakes, Cup final pressure.

The world’s biggest football showpiece is underway, with the globe’s elite nations embarking on a month-long quest for international supremacy.

Five-time world champions Brazil begin their campaign against Africa’s highest-ranked side, Morocco, in Group C in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the opening round. Brazil arrived ranked sixth in the world, just one place above Morocco, underlining how finely balanced this contest could be on paper.

As ever, Brazil are expected to dominate possession and dictate the tempo, with the electric attacking duo of Vinicius Junior and Raphinha carrying much of their creative threat in the final third. Morocco, however, have built their reputation on discipline, organisation and tactical intelligence. Led by the influential Achraf Hakimi, the Atlas Lions are likely to remain compact defensively before looking to strike with pace and precision on the counter.

Brazil bring unmatched tournament pedigree and generations of footballing excellence. Morocco, meanwhile, will be determined to prove that their remarkable run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals was no one-off and that they remain a genuine force on the global stage. The previous meeting between the two sides, an international friendly back in 2023, ended in a 2-1 scoreline in favour of Morocco. With Group C expected to be fiercely competitive, three points on opening day could prove invaluable in shaping the knockout picture and establishing early momentum.

Prediction: Brazil 4-2 Morocco

Netherlands vs Japan

(AT&T Stadium, Sunday at 11 pm)

Two of international football’s most tactically astute sides collide when the Netherlands face Japan in a fascinating Group F encounter.

The Dutch, ranked eighth in the world, enter as marginal favourites against an improving Japanese side currently sitting 18th in the global rankings. Yet this is far from a straightforward assignment for Ronald Koeman’s men. Built around the commanding presence of captain Virgil van Dijk, the Netherlands possess a balanced squad blending experience, physicality and technical quality. Their ability to control possession and dominate territory will be central to their game plan.

Japan, however, have emerged as one of the most dangerous teams outside football’s traditional powerhouses. Under Hajime Moriyasu, the Samurai Blue have developed into a tactically flexible unit capable of unsettling even the elite nations. Their recent form speaks volumes. Japan arrive on the back of five consecutive victories, including eye-catching wins over England (1-0) and Brazil (3-2) in the international friendlies. Their aggressive pressing, swift transitions and technical sharpness make them a genuine threat.

The midfield battle could ultimately decide the contest. Japan will look to absorb periods of Dutch pressure before exploiting the spaces left by attacking full-backs. The Netherlands will seek to impose their physical superiority and control the match rhythm. Expect a tense, high-quality affair between two sides with contrasting but equally effective approaches.

Prediction: Netherlands 1-2 Japan

Kenya Police vs Tusker FC (FKF Cup Final)

(Kwale Stadium, Sunday at 3.30 pm)

Silverware, continental qualification and local bragging rights are all on the line as Kenya Police face Tusker in the FKF Cup final.

Police enter the showpiece as slight favourites after completing a league double over the Brewers this season, winning 2-1 in the first meeting before securing a 1-0 victory in the return fixture. Both sides endured nervy routes to the final, requiring penalty shootouts to book their place in Sunday’s decider.

Tusker edged past KCB 4-3 on spot-kicks after a goalless stalemate in regulation time, while Police overcame Bandari 5-3 in the shootout following another scoreless draw. League form also favours the law enforcers. Kenya Police finished third in the SportPesa Premier League standings on 55 points, while Tusker ended the campaign in ninth place with 45 points.

Police possess a physically imposing squad capable of overwhelming opponents in key areas of the pitch, particularly in aerial duels and midfield battles. Their intensity and athleticism have been major weapons. Tusker, meanwhile, will seek to negate that advantage through intelligent movement, quick transitions and aggressive pressing. If they can move the ball quickly and bypass Police’s midfield press, they have the attacking quality to cause problems.

Cup finals often ignore form books, but Police appear the more complete side heading into the contest. Still, Tusker’s pedigree and experience on the big occasion ensure this will be anything but straightforward.

Prediction: Kenya Police 3-1 Tusker FC
