Muslims unite in prayer for Eid al-Adha

Muslim faithful gathered at Sir Ali grounds in Nairobi on Wednesday morning for prayers to mark Eid al-Adha, one of the most significant celebrations in the Islamic calendar.

Men, women and children streamed into the grounds in the early hours dressed in colourful attire as they joined fellow worshippers for the annual prayers.

The celebrations were marked by prayers, reflection and acts of charity as Muslims across the country commemorated the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God before a ram was provided as a substitute.

At the prayer grounds, women sat in organised rows while men filled large sections of the field during the solemn prayers led by Islamic clerics.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is observed through prayers, sharing of meals and slaughtering of animals such as goats, sheep and cows, with meat distributed among relatives, neighbours and the needy.

Kenya marked the day as a public holiday following a declaration by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
