Mathare United coach Mohammed Mchulla has vowed to steer the club away from SportPesa League relegation.
The relegation-threatened Slum Boys picked a crucial 1-0 win on Saturday against hosts Mara Sugar at Awendo Green Stadium, with Mara Sugar defender Robinson Musungu turning the ball into his own net.
Mchulla said the entire squad is fully committed to the survival battle and ready to fight to keep the club in the top flight.
Mchulla, who replaced John Kamau following his sacking a week ago, described the remaining two fixtures against fellow strugglers Ulinzi Stars and Bandari as “finals”.
Mathare United need just one more win to secure their SportPesa League status.
“The games against Ulinzi Stars and Bandari will determine our fate. The players are aware of this and will fight for the badge. We must stay focused and get positive results. The entire team must give more than 100 per cent,” said the youthful tactician.
Reflecting on the win over Mara Sugar, Mchulla praised his players for showing character.
“It was a sweet win against Mara Sugar. This is what we spoke about all week. The challenge now is the next final; we have already forgotten the Mara Sugar win. We were tactically better, and the players gave it their all,” he added.
He also noted that helping the team avoid relegation would be a valuable milestone in his coaching career.
“It will be a good addition to my CV if I save the team from the drop. But it’s also about the team, not individual glory,” said Mchulla.
The win in Migori lifted Mathare United to 12th on the log with 38 points from 32 matches.
The 2009 champions Sofapaka and Bidco United have already been relegated to the National Super League for next season.
