A 40-year-old farmhand has died after reportedly suffocating inside a silage pit in Kigumo Sub-County, Murang’a County, in an incident that is under investigation by detectives.
The incident occurred on the morning of May 6, 2026, in the Kangari area. According to police, the deceased, identified as Josphat Murunga Musaki, a farmhand, had gone to feed cattle after milking.
He is said to have entered an anaerobic silage pit approximately 10 feet deep in an attempt to remove feed, instead of using the usual method of scooping from outside with an improvised tool.
Police say the victim is believed to have run out of oxygen while inside the pit and was unable to exit.
With assistance from members of the public, the man was retrieved from the pit, but he was already dead.
Police who visited the scene confirmed that the body had no visible external injuries. The scene was processed, and the body was moved to AIC Githumu Funeral Home, where it awaits a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Investigations are ongoing.
In a separate incident, police in Nyamira South Sub-County are investigating the death of a 30-year-old man who was found dead at his home in Mabundu Village, Bogichora Location. The incident was reported on May 6, 2026, at Nyamira Police Station.
The deceased, identified as Boniface Bundi, a Kisii male adult, was discovered lying on his bed inside his semi-permanent house wearing blood-stained clothes. He also had a bandage on his left hand.
According to his mother, the deceased returned home the previous evening at around 6:00 p.m. with a bleeding right hand. He reportedly said he had been involved in a fight with an unidentified man who injured him with a machete (panga).
He was taken to a nearby private facility where he was treated and discharged. He later went to bed at around 8:00 p.m., but was found dead the following morning.
Police officers visited the scene and confirmed that the body was lying on the bed in blood-stained clothing. Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers processed and documented the scene.
The body was moved to Nyamira County Referral Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examination. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.
In Machakos County’s Ndithini area, the body of 63-year-old Josephat Mutua, who was found dead on a farm, was retrieved after a standoff between locals and police. The locals had refused to allow the removal of the body, alleging that the team that arrived at the scene was not professional.
The team left the scene on May 4 and returned the following day when the body was collected and taken to the mortuary for further procedures.
Police said the body had been burnt and lay on a farm about a kilometre from his official house. They added that the body had been partially eaten by dogs and that the deceased was a village elder and a pastor. The motive for the incident was not immediately known, but police said they were pursuing the matter.
In Nyatike, Migori County, police are investigating an incident in which a miner was fatally injured in a mining shaft. Police said Joshua Jagero, 32, was at the site when a loose stone fell and hit him in the head, killing him. His body was later moved to the mortuary pending further procedures, police said.
Police added that such deaths at gold mining sites have been on the rise amid calls for mine owners to ensure the safety of workers.
