Worker dies while draining water from septic tank at Athi River construction site

A worker has died while draining water from a septic tank at a construction site in Athi River.

According to police, the incident occurred on April 18, 2026, at around 3:30 pm at a building under construction in the Githunguri area.

Police officers who responded to the scene established that three workers had entered an underground septic tank in an attempt to drain water that had accumulated following heavy rains.

Authorities believe the workers lost consciousness due to a lack of oxygen while inside the confined space.

The building owner reportedly noticed the situation and quickly alerted members of the public, who rushed to assist in rescue efforts.

During the operation, Antony Njoroge was retrieved from the septic tank, but was already dead. The two other workers were successfully rescued and rushed to a hospital, where they were admitted in stable condition.

Police processed and documented the scene, noting that the deceased had no visible external injuries. The body was later moved to Mama Lucy Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination.

The incident highlights the dangers associated with confined spaces at construction sites, especially in the absence of proper safety measures. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Elsewhere, police in Kisumu East Sub-county launched investigations after the body of an unidentified woman was discovered floating in the Nyamasaria River under suspicious circumstances.

According to the police, the incident was reported on April 18, 2026, at around 4:50 p.m. by a local resident who spotted what appeared to be a human body while walking along the riverbank at Rae Kanyaiaka Village in Kolwa Central Location.

Police visited the scene and confirmed the body of an unknown African female adult, which is believed to have been carried downstream by the fast-flowing waters following heavy rainfall currently being experienced in the area.

With the assistance of county divers, the body was retrieved from the river.

A preliminary examination revealed a deep cut wound on the head, with blood also observed oozing from the nose, raising suspicions of foul play.

Police suspect the woman may have been murdered elsewhere and her body dumped in the river in an attempt to conceal the crime.

The scene was processed and documented by forensic officers before the body was moved to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits identification and a postmortem examination.

Authorities are now appealing to the public with missing persons reports or any information that could assist in identifying the deceased to come forward as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, two women were arrested after being found with a mobile phone that was robbed from a murder victim.

This followed the murder of Michael Ochieng Mitalo on March 8, 2026, in Kosele, Homa Bay county.

The women were arrested in the area on April 18 following an investigation. One of them was found with the deceased’s mobile phone- an Infinix- and led detectives to the one who sold her the gadget.

A prime suspect is in custody over the murder of the man, and another one who is on the run is being sought, police said.

The two women were taken into custody for interrogation and further processing.
