Police are investigating an incident in which a female student was found dead in what is suspected to be a suicide at a hostel in Gataka, Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County.
Police said the victim, 19-year-old Bigonia Mutanu Maluki, was a law student.
She is suspected of having died by suicide. The motive of the April 1, 2026, incident was not immediately known.
Her roommate told police, who responded to the scene, that she returned to the hostel and found the body hanging on a beam of the roof, with a curtain sheet tied around her neck.
Police moved the body to the mortuary pending other procedures.
Her parents were informed of the incident. Police said her colleagues stated she had not shown any signs of stress to warrant her actions.
In a separate incident in Malindi, Kilifi County, a 28-year-old man was found dead with his body hanging on a tree with a rope tied around his neck, in what is also suspected to be a suicide.
The man, identified as Prince Kazungu, had gone to work on March 30 but failed to return home. His body was later found on a mango tree on April 1 and moved to the mortuary pending other procedures. The motive of the incident is not yet known.
Police said suicide cases have been on the rise, with officers recording up to five daily.
In a separate incident in Madunguni village, Malindi, Kilifi County, a 25-year-old woman died after an electrocution incident in her house, while her four-year-old son was seriously injured in the April 1 incident, police said.
The woman was identified as Doris Kahindi Ngua.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately clear, adding that they were informed before visiting the scene.
She was pronounced dead on arrival, while the child was admitted in serious condition, police said.
Kenya Power and Lighting Company officials and police visited the scene as part of the investigations.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending other procedures.
