From food science to KEBS managing director – Esther Ngari speaks

In this week’s episode of She Means Business, Esther Ngari, EBS, Managing Director of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), offers a candid look into her journey to the helm of one of Kenya’s most critical regulatory bodies—underscoring that success is rarely accidental.

Ngari attributes her rise to a foundation of discipline, consistency, and hard work. With a background in food science, her early career shaped not only her technical expertise but also her growing interest in sustainability—an area that continues to influence her leadership at KEBS.

At KEBS, Ngari is also steering the organization into the future, highlighting how artificial intelligence is transforming operations, improving efficiency, and enhancing the standards ecosystem in Kenya.

But beyond her professional achievements, Ngari is intentional about mentorship—especially for women navigating corporate spaces. Her advice is clear: take initiative and claim your space.

“Don’t wait for a seat at the table to be handed to you—take it,” she says. “And if you have an idea, don’t just discuss it with colleagues. Present it directly to decision-makers. Too often, ideas are diluted or even taken.”

Outside the boardroom, Ngari embraces balance, with spa days offering a chance to unwind from the demands of leadership.
