Students injured, dorm destroyed in Ngao Girls fire

A fire incident was reported on Monday evening at Ngao Girls Secondary School in Tarasaa subcounty, Tana River county, following an explosion in one of the dormitories.

According to the Ministry of Interior, the incident occurred at about 7.15 pm while students were attending evening preps.

The learners reported hearing a loud bang before noticing flames coming from the dormitory. The fire spread quickly, destroying beds, mattresses and students’ personal belongings.

Members of the local community and the school administration responded swiftly.

They managed to contain the fire using available means before the arrival of the fire brigade and security agencies.

The school administration, supported by teachers and members of the Board of Management, later accounted for all students.

No fatalities were reported. However, a few students sustained minor injuries during the incident.

They were taken to Ngao Sub-County Hospital, where they received treatment and were reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities said police officers and emergency response teams have since arrived at the school and begun investigations to establish the cause of the fire.

Officials are also carrying out a comprehensive assessment to determine the extent of the damage caused by the blaze.

The Ministry of Interior said the situation has been brought under control, with efforts now focused on investigations and recovery. County Commissioner Joseph M. Wamuti confirmed the incident and said relevant authorities were on site to handle the situation and support those affected. The incident disrupted normal activities at the school, with part of the dormitory infrastructure destroyed in the fire.
