Rain, reckless driving and ruin: Wetang’ula decries road carnage

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has expressed concern over the rising cases of road carnage in the country following a deadly accident at Malaha Junction along the Webuye–Kitale road.

At least 14 people were killed and 16 others seriously injured in the Monday night accident

In a statement on Tuesday, the Speaker said the tragedy, which claimed several lives and left many others injured, was a painful reminder of the need for greater vigilance on Kenyan roads, especially during the ongoing rainy season.

“Road carnage remains a serious concern for our nation, especially during this heavy rainy season,” Wetang’ula said.

He urged motorists, passengers and pedestrians to exercise caution while using the roads, noting that careless driving and poor adherence to traffic rules continue to claim lives.

“I urge all road users to exercise caution and vigilance, and call upon traffic law enforcers to strengthen safety measures to help prevent such tragedies,” he said.

Wetang’ula described the accident at Malaha Junction along the Webuye–Kitale highway as a devastating loss that has left several families grieving.

“The tragic accident at Malaha Junction along the Webuye–Kitale road, which has claimed several lives and left many families in mourning, is a painful reminder that even one life lost on our roads is one too many,” he said.

The Speaker conveyed his condolences to families that lost loved ones in the crash and wished those injured a quick recovery.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the families who have lost their loved ones. I also wish those injured a quick recovery,” he said.

“May God grant strength and comfort to the bereaved families, and may the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.”

There is a campaign to address the accident menace in the country. Close to 5,000 people were killed in separate accidents in 2025.

Officials say reckless overtaking, speeding, and drunk driving remain among the leading causes of road accidents across the country, continuing to claim lives despite sustained public safety campaigns by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
