Kitui County Assembly Speaker, Kevin Katisya, has expressed deep concern over the rising cases of cancer in the country and backed calls for President William Ruto to declare the disease a national disaster.
Speaking in his office on Tuesday after hosting Kamba musician Eric Mutuku Mwinzi, popularly known as Biez Kaviru, Katisya lauded the artiste for his recent awareness campaign.
A week ago, Biez completed a 150km walk from Kitui to Nairobi to raise public awareness about cancer.
“I congratulated Biez on his bold five-day walk from Kitui to Nairobi, trekking through Kitui and Machakos counties to raise awareness about cancer- a true menace plaguing our nation,” Katisya said.
The musician walked to Nairobi and visited President Ruto’s office, where he delivered a petition urging the Head of State to declare cancer a national disaster.
Katisya described Biez Kaviru’s petition as a powerful call to action.
“I pledge my full support to his initiative and urge MCAs in Kitui to prioritise the formulation of policies and laws that will make cancer screening and treatment accessible to every resident,” he said.
The speaker met Biez on the day the Kitui county assembly resumed sittings after the Christmas recess.
Katisya urged the ward reps to unite and cooperate to enhance effective service delivery.
He expressed optimism that the assembly will effectively discharge its mandate and contribute meaningfully to the county’s socio-economic development as it embarks on its fifth session.
“With only one year and six months to the general election, history will judge this house not by rhetoric, but by the quality, relevance and impact of our legislative output,” the speaker said in a communication to members.
