Former Tusker Project Fame winner and gospel minister, Ruth Matete, has shared a moving tribute to her late husband, Pastor John Apewajoye.
Six years into her journey of widowhood, the singer is choosing to celebrate the profound love they shared rather than dwell on the pain of his passing.
In a recent social media post, Matete reflected on the sweet memories that continue to shape her life. She expressed a deep sense of peace, noting that looking back is not a sign of being stuck, but a celebration of a life truly lived.

Visions of a Shared Life
Matete shared a video slide featuring a collection of cherished photographs that captured their bond. The images show a couple full of life and laughter.
In several shots, John is seen literally lifting Ruth in his arms, showcasing their playful and affectionate relationship. The video is set to the song Papaoutai.
“He didn’t just lift me in prayers, as you can see; he used to literally lift me. I carry these memories with gratitude. They don’t pull me back; they remind me of a love that was real. Remembering doesn’t mean I haven’t healed—it means I lived,” she posted.
Matete noted that he did more than just support her through prayer; he was a constant, uplifting presence in her daily life.
Healing and the Search for New Love
Despite the tragic nature of her loss, Matete’s outlook remains remarkably positive. She shared that she is patiently waiting for love to find her again, but she is not in a hurry.

Her current state of mind is one of contentment, rooted in the knowledge that she was truly and deeply loved.
For Matete, these memories are no longer open wounds. Instead, she views them as proof of love. She has made it clear that while she remains open to a future relationship, she will continue to hold onto the memories of John until that new chapter begins.
“These are the memories I hold close as I patiently wait for love to find me again—if it ever does. And if it doesn’t, I will still be content knowing I was truly and deeply loved at one point in my life.”
The Tragedy in Athi River
The story of Ruth and John took a devastating turn in early 2020. John Apewajoye, a Nigerian national, was involved in a gas cylinder explosion at their home in Athi River, Kenya, in March 2020.

Following the accident, John was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). He fought for his life for nearly two weeks before passing away in April 2020.
An autopsy later revealed that he died from complications due to severe burns, which led to sepsis and multiple organ failure.
