My name is Vanessa, a 22-year-old student at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, and my life today looks like something many people only see on social media. I drive a Benz, live in a mansion, and my wardrobe is full of clothes I rarely repeat. But this life did not come easily, and it did not start this way at all. In fact, I come from a very poor background.I grew up struggling.
Paying school fees was a problem, meals were not guaranteed, and sometimes I had to miss classes because I could not afford basic needs. When I joined Makerere, things became even harder. I depended on handouts from friends, and there were days I cried myself to sleep. I watched other students enjoy life while I worried about rent and food. I was ashamed of my situation, but I kept hoping things would change.I tried small hustles like selling clothes and snacks, but nothing worked. Money would come and disappear immediately.
