Four of Maraga’s campaign team members involved in grisly crash

Four members of UGM Party Presidential Aspirant David Maraga’s campaign team have been hospitalised following a serious road accident that occurred on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.

According to a statement released by the former Chief Justice, the team members were traveling back to Nairobi after accompanying Maraga to a funeral event in Nyamira County when the incident occurred.

“A lorry veered off the road, lost control and swerved into us on our lane,” read part of the statement describing the circumstances of the accident.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and rushed all four campaign staff members to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Images of the accident scene show significant damage to the vehicle carrying Maraga’s team members.

The former Chief Justice, who is seeking the presidency in the upcoming 2027 elections, was not in the vehicle at the time of the collision.

Maraga has confirmed that he is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining contact with his injured colleagues.

“We are following the situation closely. We are in touch with our colleagues. We ask that you keep them in prayer as the Doctors and nurses attend to them,” he stated.

Prior to the accident, Maraga and his team had attended the funeral of Mzee Meshack Machuka in Nyamira.

In his tribute, Maraga described Machuka as “an industrious man, beloved by many” who had served in various capacities including as a bus conductor, clerk at the National Cereals Board, and later as a teacher in both Tanzania and Kenya before retiring in 1996.

“Together with other leaders we joined the family of Mzee Meshack Machuka, to mourn an industrious man, beloved by many. In his early life, he engaged in the transport sector where he worked as a bus conductor in Kericho. He later served as a clerk at the National Cereals Board before joining the teaching profession, serving in Tanzania and Kenya,” Maraga said.

“He taught in several schools including Nyakaranga and Nyabione primary schools before retiring in 1996. Mzee Meshack also served as a church Elder, treasurer, clerk and deacon throughout his life. We celebrate a life of service and dedication to humanity. May we pick up where he left off, with integrity and purpose. To our friends, Rodgers and Bina, may the Lord comfort you during these difficult time.”

This incident comes amid increasing concerns about road safety during the holiday season. Just days earlier, several people were injured in another serious accident at Magina Centre along the busy Nairobi-Naivasha Highway, involving a passenger bus and a lorry.

Authorities have not yet provided additional details regarding the condition of Maraga’s team members or the driver of the lorry involved in the accident.
