Nakuru: PSV Matatu that Killed 13 People at Kikopey Was Overtaking, Police Say

On Sunday, September 28, an accident occurred when a public service vehicle (PSV) matatu rammed into a lorry at the Elementaita area near Kipopey in Gilgil, killing 13 people on the spot. Three others were injured and were rushed to the nearest hospitals for treatment. According to reports, the victims had hired the matatu from Nairobi to head for a family function.

Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru said the fourteen-seater matatu was headed to Nakuru when it collided head-on with a semi-trailer truck. What caused the Elementaita accident? Preliminary investigation showed that the PSV matatu was overtaking moments before the fatal crash. “The matatu was overtaking and then it rammed into the trailer, causing 13 fatalities and three others seriously injured. Fatalities have been rushed to Gilgil Sub-county Mortuary and the seriously injured have been rushed to Gilgil hospital,” Opuru said. Heartbreaking CCTV footage emerged capturing the moment the tragic accident happened at Elementaita. In the video seen by TUKO.co.ke, the PSV matatu could be seen trying to overtake moments before colliding with the incoming trailer.
