Tragedy struck a tyre repair centre when a mechanic died after a tyre that he was repairing burst on his face in Kaptagat area, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The incident happened on June 14 in the evening at Flax Trading Centre, police and witnesses said.

Police said Shadrack Kipkorir Kiptoo, 23, was repairing a lorry tyre at around 5 pm at the centre when it burst and split his head into two pieces, hence dying instantly.

The incident caused panic at the centre as other locals mistook it for a blast, taking cover briefly, witnesses told police.

The body was taken to Kamwosor Sub-county hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.

Meanwhile, a man died after being bitten by a snake in a village in Kinango, Kwale County.

The incident happened in Gandini village and left Baya Jumaa, 19, dead.

He was bitten by a snake while herding goats and later rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said they found two snake bites on his body.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.

Such incidents are common in the area amid a campaign to address the menace.

And two men died by suicide in separate incidents in Nakuru and Kitale.

The first incident was reported in Dundori forest in Nakuru, where the body of a man was found hanging from a tree with a rope tied around his neck.

Police said the deceased was identified as Daniel Ndahi Wanjehia, 63 and had three original title deeds bearing his name, along with his national identity card in his gumboots.

The motive of the incident was not immediately known.

In Kiminini, Trans Nzoia, one Gad Kiptooo died by suicide in his house.

His body was discovered on Monday, long after he had died by hanging himself in the house.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and investigations.

Suicide cases have been on the rise, with up to three being recorded daily.

Most of the victims are men, police statistics show.

There is a campaign to address trauma, which is the leading cause of the cases.
