As the country looks forward to celebrating Madaraka Day on June 1, the government has worked on key projects in preparation for the big day to be held at the new Raila Odinga stadium in Homa Bay county.

In a statement on Wednesday, Interior CS Raymond Omollo said the stadium is undergoing extensive upgrades under the stewardship of the State Department for Sports and Sports Kenya.

“KeNHA has already commenced the upgrading of the 1.2-kilometer Homa Bay pier–stadium road and the 2-kilometer access road leading to the county government headquarters in Arujo,” Omollo said.

“KeRRA has also prioritised grading works along the 11-kilometer Wahambla–Imbo road and the 12-kilometer Ruga–Lala road. Concurrently, Kura is overseeing the repair and upgrading of 10.8 kilometers of access roads around the venue.”

The PS said the construction of public terraces and rehabilitation of the pavilion are over 70 per cent complete, with a designated parking area and an extensive perimeter wall being 60 per cent and 80 per cent compiete respectively.

Additionally, Omollo said the State Department for Roads is on the ground implementing major road works to ensure seamless accessibility and movement across the county with more than 35 kilometers being under construction.

On the other hand, the county commissioner’s residence is undergoing rehabilitation as it will host the official State Garden Party.

The works include on the main house, staff quarters, ablution facilities, gazebo and the external infrastructure like perimeter walls, water tanks, pavements and internal roads which are more than 75 per cent complete.

Lastly, the government, through the State Department for Transport and the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), is also refurbishing the Kabunde Airstrip.

The works include repair of fencing at both ends of the runway, which is completed, and the extension of the runway, which is 70 per cent done.

Omollo appreciated the support and cooperation of the Homa Bay county government and the local community for the cooperation to ensure a successful and memorable Madaraka Day celebration.

The vent honours freedom fighters and offers Kenyans an opportunity to reflect on its unity and progress of the nation.

This year’s celebrations will fall on a Sunday, meaning June 2 will be a public holiday.
