A family is crying foul over the death of a mother and baby at Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital on Tuesday, April 22, during delivery. Anthony Juma addresses the media. Anthony Juma, a resident of Posta Estate in Kaptembwa ward, said that his wife Phylis developed bleeding on Monday, April 21, around 7pm and requested him to be taken to the hospital. He said that he found a long line but managed to take her to the reception, and despite the bleeding, there was no urgent attention to help her.
“She was told if she had done any scanning, and since she had not, we were directed to do the scanning around 9pm, and she was still bleeding,” he said. Juma explained that after the scanning, she took her back to Margaret Kenyatta Mother and Baby wing, and that’s when the results came; they were notified that the baby had passed on. How did Phylis die in Nakuru hospital The dejected husband said that after the notification of the results, he was told that his wife would have to be taken to the theatre. He said that she was taken to the theatre around 9.43pm and had to wait for some time before the security informed him that the time to stay around had lapsed and he had to leave until the next day. “Around 5am, there is a medic who called me, and I had to rush there, and I found that the patient was still inside the theatre.
I was told that she had been taken to the recovery room and since she continued to bleed, she was returned back to the theatre,” Juma added. He revealed that he was informed his wife’s womb had detached itself from the body and needed to be rectified, and it was at that point that she had to be infused with six pints of blood. Juma said that he was told that he would be informed of the progress of the patient, and that he was called at around 9am and was told that she had been rushed to the ICU after her condition deteriorated. “I don’t know how she was taken to the ICU, but I was told she has been taken there. We were held outside for about 10 minutes, then we were ushered into the registration together with my sister and my brother,” he said.
He said that they were informed that the medics had done the best to save her life, but unfortunately, lost the battle. Why is Juma blaming Nakuru hospital for wife’s death Juma blamed the staff for taking long to arrest the bleeding of his wife, the moment they arrived at the facility, saying that other processes took long, including the scan, before intervention was undertaken. The family demanded answers, calling for accountability. Florence Abuma, grandmother to the deceased, said that she took care of her after the death of her father, and she has been a good child, working hard. Abuma said that she was shocked about the news of the death of her granddaughter, and it broke her heart terribly.
“Is this a Level Five Hospital, just a picture, or a real operation facility? Why should we lose somebody who has gone to seek assistance because of bleeding, and no urgent intervention is taken? I can say these medics killed my granddaughter,” she said. Phanice Atieno, Juma’s sister, said that she expected to get good news from her in-laws but blamed the staff for alleged negligence in saving the life. The family called for a thorough investigation into the incident, and any nurse or doctor who failed to save the life was to face action.
