In an extraordinary event that has captivated the nation, a Ugandan woman from Nyamufuruma village in Sheema District delivered six babies—five boys and one girl—on Good Friday.
Glorious Betonde and her husband, Vincent Tumwesigye, became the proud parents of the rare sextuplets, a phenomenon that has left both their community and medical professionals in awe.
A Medical Marvel
The birth, which occurred seven months into Glorious’s pregnancy rather than the typical nine, was deemed miraculous by doctors. Due to complications, she underwent an emergency caesarean section to safely deliver the babies.
“It was not easy,” Glorious recounted. “At three months, there was a risk of premature labour. By seven months, I could barely move. The doctors advised delivering early to prevent my uterus from rupturing.”
The newborns faced immediate challenges, including difficulties with breathing and feeding—a common issue for premature babies. However, medical staff remain optimistic, drawing on prior experience to care for the infants.
Community Support and Father’s Emotional Response
The couple has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love from their village, with neighbours celebrating Glorious’s strength. Remarkably, this was her second delivery—a fact that further astonished well-wishers.
Vincent, who is ten years Glorious’s junior, shared his disbelief: “I’d heard of such cases abroad, but never imagined it would happen to us in Uganda. Our family will do our best, but we welcome any support from kind-hearted people.”
With six newborns requiring intensive care, the couple faces significant financial and logistical hurdles. Their focus is now on day-to-day survival, with hopes that wider community or government assistance will ease their burden.
