Jeremy Monga: Why Leicester City Player Wore Blank Shirt on Premier League Debut vs Newcastle

Goals from Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes, both scored in the first half, were enough for Newcastle United to silence Leicester City in front of their home fans in a thrilling Premier League clash at the King Power Stadium on Monday night. Away from the goals, another moment that caught the attention of supporters was when Foxes youngster Jeremy Monga came off the bench in the 74th minute wearing a blank shirt. Leicester City debutant Jeremy Monga had to wear a blank shirt during their match against Newcastle United. The jersey names are essential for match officials and broadcasters, especially during fast-paced games where quick identification is crucial. Why Leicester City debutant Jeremy Monga wore blank shirt Born in 2009, the 15-year-old England international became the second-youngest player in Premier League history, behind Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri, who made his debut at 15 years and 181 days in September 2022.

On the front, sponsors are a key part of club’s identity and revenue. Brands pay significant sums to have their logos displayed on team shirts, as televised matches provide massive exposure to global audiences. As per BBC Sports, the young talent was not allowed to wear the same kit as his teammates due to the club’s sponsors. The Foxes’ shirts feature the crypto casino BC Game on the front, but since the wonderkid is only 15 years and 271 days old, he is not permitted to promote a gambling company. The winger, wearing the number 93 on his back, thus played in a kit without the sponsor’s logo printed across his chest.

Other notable youngest players to feature in the Premier League include Matthew Briggs, who played for Fulham at 16 years and 68 days, and Aaron Lennon, who was 16 years and 129 days old when he appeared for Leeds. Harvey Elliott made his debut for Fulham at 16 years and 30 days. Isaiah Brown represented West Brom at 16 years and 117 days. Manager Ruud van Nistelrooy praised Monga

The former Manchester United tactician Ruud van Nistelrooy praised Monga, stating that his qualities were evident, highlighting his speed and ability as a great winger. He also described Monga as a fantastic talent and a great boy, mentioning that he deserved the minutes he played and hoped for more opportunities in the future.  Nistelrooy said of Monga, “You can see glimpses of his great qualities. He’s a great winger and has speed.” He added, “He’s a fantastic talent, a great boy. He deserved these minutes and hopefully, there will be more to come.” Jamie Vardy mocks Tottenham over Premier League title drought TUKO.co.ke had earlier reported how Foxes striker Jamie Vardy mocked Tottenham Hotspur over their Premier League title drought. When the 35-year-old was substituted with 11 minutes remaining, he took a moment to remind Spurs fans of his Premier League title win. He pointed to the league’s badge on his chest and raised one finger, signalling his title victory. He then formed a zero with his hand to represent the number of titles Tottenham have won.
