The government, through Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, has addressed the Thika Road robberies that occurred following President William Ruto’s tour in Nairobi. PS Raymond Omollo has outlined the government’s approach to addressing criminal gangs involved in the Thika Road robberies. On Tuesday, March 11, motorists, passengers and pedestrians were robbed of their valuables along Thika Superhighway. Various videos captured groups of rowdy youths breaking into high-end personal vehicles and public service vehicles, making away with handbags, wallets, and purses. Some went as far as opening the trunks of personal vehicles to search for valuables. At one point, a youth was captured and caned by angry motorists.
Motorists voiced their frustration over the ongoing robberies that took place for a significant part of Tuesday along the busy highway. What did Raymond Omollo say about Thika Road robberies? While speaking to Spice FM on Wednesday, March 12, PS Omollo acknowledged the robbery incident, stating that the Ministry of Interior is responsible for managing such situations and preventing their recurrence. However, he noted that the ministry must maintain a balanced approach, ensuring both the security of Kenyans and their property while also handling criminals appropriately. “There must be moderation in terms of how we deal with it. Otherwise, we then fall into the realm of trying to go against the fundamental human rights,” Omollo said. “Take the case of the last bit you’ve just mentioned about where Kenyans are being robbed and we have a responsibility to contain that and while trying to do that we do not go above board,” he added
DCI shares photos of Kenyan captured looting The Thika Road robbery is not an isolated incident. In July 2024, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) sought public assistance in identifying youth caught on camera looting shops in Nairobi. An image showing the entrance of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters. The investigative unit stated that some individuals exploited the unrest in the capital to inflict harm and cause economic hardship to others. The unit stated that they had obtained CCTV footage showing identifiable individuals robbing pedestrians and businesses in Nairobi’s Central Business District. The DCI urged Kenyans with any information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects captured on camera to come forward and report, ensuring they face legal action.
