The luxury cruise liner MV Norwegian Dawn has docked at the Port of Mombasa from Seychelles, bringing with it 2,220 tourists.

The vessel, stretching 294 metres in length with a draft of 8.3 metres, ranks among the largest cruise ships ever to dock in Mombasa.

According to a statement by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the arrival of Norwegian Dawn highlights the growing appeal of Kenya as a cruise destination, following the recent docking of MS Europa and MS World Odyssey the latter famously known as ‘Semester at Sea’.

The Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, hailed the arrival of the vessel as a testament to Kenya’s growing status as a top tourist destination.

The continued increase in cruise vessel visits is attributed to the enhanced infrastructure at Mombasa Port, including a modern cruise terminal and strategic developments positioning Kenya as a preferred stopover for international liners.

“With a length overall of 294 metres and a draft of 8.3 metres, she is one of the largest cruise vessels to ever call Mombasa bringing the over 2000 tourists from various nationalities majorly the United States of America to the Kenyan shores.” The statement read. Adding that, “Enhanced infrastructure notably a modern cruise terminal and other strategic developments have led to a surge in cruise vessel calls at the ports of Mombasa and Lamu, positioning Kenya as key destination for international cruise liners.”

The vessel was piloted into the port in the early morning hours by Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Capt. William Ruto, ensuring a seamless arrival for the luxury liner.

The tourists are expected to visit key attractions such as Fort Jesus, Haller Park, Diani Beach, and Tsavo National Park, providing a significant boost to the local tourism sector.

The government has prioritized enhancing Mombasa’s cruise terminal and road networks to facilitate easy movement for visitors exploring the region.
