Reacting to the results, Kalonzo cited what he termed mistakes by President Ruto which could have contributed to Raila’s loss.  Speaking at a church service in Kitui County on Sunday, February 16, Kalonzo claimed Raila’s prospects in the continental role’s race were undermined by Ruto’s efforts to mediate the crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

According to Kalonzo, the South African Development Community (SADC) had issues with the way Ruto handled the DR Congo crisis. Kalonzo claimed most of the SADC member states voted for Mahmoud in protest of Ruto’s alleged interference in DR Congo internal affairs. “The 16-member SADC (Southern African Development Community) bloc had issues with William Ruto’s leadership. This is what caused this terrible loss to the country. Raila’s image was soiled by this loss. SADC supported Djibouti’s candidate because of their problem with Ruto,” Kalonzo claimed. “That is one major reason because that bloc of 16 decided to vote for their person in round 2, remember Raila had 22 votes, and when the other Madagascar candidate pulled out the whole of SADC supported Djibouti because they had a problem with William Ruto. We have to tell each other the truth,” he added.
