Kithure Kindiki is Preferred Mt Kenya Kingpin, New Survey Shows

A new study shows that Deputy President Kithure Kindiki will likely unite the vote-rich Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election. The Politrack Africa opinion poll conducted between November 9 and November 13, 2024, reveals a strong public endorsement of Kindiki’s leadership across multiple performance metrics. “With ratings ranging from 69% to 78% in various dimensions, the results highlight significant confidence in his ability to deliver on his mandate, foster regional unity, address national challenges, and promote national cohesion,” the poll reads in part.

Politrack Africa says these findings underscore Kindiki’s growing influence and trust among the people, positioning him as a key figure in regional representation and national leadership. “The data reflects a clear sentiment of optimism and renewed hope in his leadership capabilities moving forward. The results demonstrate that Kindiki enjoys consistent approval ratings across all measured aspects,” the poll report reads. It further adds, “This highlights a broadly positive perception of his leadership, with renewed hope and regional representation emerging as standout strengths.” While regional unity can be improved, the poll suggested that the overall ratings reflect a favourable and optimistic public sentiment toward Kindiki’s leadership.

The country’s second in command is at the top of the list with 62.1%, followed by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro at 17.9%. Former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua came third at 9.1%. The poll was conducted as resentment in the Mount Kenya region grew after parliament impeached Gachagua. Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru came a distant fourth with 6.2% of the total votes, and national assembly majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah completing the top five at 3.1%. Are Kenyans confident in Kithure Kindiki? The poll also found that 63.4% of Kenyans are strongly confident in Kindiki’s ability to deliver on his responsibilities as the deputy president, while only 2.3% strongly disagreed. Kindiki became Kenya’s new deputy president after the Senate voted to oust Gachagua. Legal attempts by Gachagua to delay Kindiki’s swearing-in ceremony failed. The 52-year-old professor of law previously served as president Ruto’s Interior Minister for two years.
