President William Ruto has expressed his deep pride and admiration for the achievements of the Kenya Navy.
In his remarks made during the 60th anniversary of the Kenya Navy in Mombasa on Saturday, he acknowledged the tireless work and commitment of the military in safeguarding the nation’s interests, both on land and at sea.
“As Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, I am immensely proud of the KDF’s achievements as an institution, and particularly of the Kenya Navy, which is the youngest of the three services,” he said.
Ruto stated that since independence, the Kenya Navy has participated in important national and international peace missions and major operations.
He listed them as Operation Exodus, Operation Mamba, and Operation Linda Nchi, including the amphibious landing in Kismayu under Operation Sledgehammer, which liberated the city.
Ruto emphasised the Navy’s role in humanitarian missions, such as providing aid during maritime disasters, search and rescue operations, and evacuations during national emergencies.
“The Kenya Navy’s contributions extend far beyond military operations,” he said.
“Its involvement in humanitarian efforts, including providing disaster relief and conducting search-and-rescue missions, is a testament to its versatility and commitment to the people of Kenya.”
These efforts, he said, were a testament to the Navy’s versatility and readiness to serve not just as a defense force, but as a lifeline in times of crisis.
The President also underscored the importance of collaboration between the Kenya Navy and other security agencies, particularly the Kenya Coast Guard Service.
Together, he said, they form the backbone of Kenya’s National Maritime Defense Strategy, ensuring the protection of the country’s vast coastline, resources, and critical sea lanes.
Looking to the future, Ruto expressed a clear vision for the next 60 years, focusing on modernising the fleet, adopting new technologies, and enhancing the skills and operational capacity of personnel.
“We must continue enhancing our naval capabilities, embracing innovation, and strengthening our partnerships,” he said.
“Our focus will remain on maintaining a high state of readiness to address the dynamic security challenges of the future.”
In a heartfelt conclusion, Ruto paid tribute to the fallen heroes of the Kenya Navy, honouring their sacrifice and dedication.
“We would not have reached this proud milestone without their vision and hard work. Their legacy lives on in each of you, and the entire nation is grateful for your service,” Ruto said.
