Homa Bay senator Moses Kajwang’-led County Public Accounts has emerged as the best-performing Senate Committee in a new survey. The survey assessed committees based on oversight, legislative initiatives, media presence, and community engagement.
According to the Global Ranking Analysis Overview Senate Committees Performance Report Release on Tuesday, 3 December 2024, Kajwang’s committee garnered 75.8%. How did Kenyan senate committees perform in 2024?
The Authoritative Global Ranking Analysis research firm concurrently conducted the research and analysis of the Senate committees and Senate sessions for the year ending 2024. The County Public Accounts committee was followed closely by Geoffrey Osotsi-led County Public Investment and Special Funds, which garnered 74.5%.
In the survey, Mohammed Abbas Sheikh Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations came third at 70.7%. Marsabit senator Chute Mohamed Said, who chairs the National Cohesion, Equal Opportunity and Regional Integration, came in fourth at 69.4%. Kirinyaga senator Murango James Kamau who chairs the Senate Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries committe emerged fifth at 64.4%.
The Authoritative Global Ranking Analysis team conducted an extensive and deep analysis with a comprehensive study on the key performance of various Senate Committees in fulfilling their constitutional mandate for the Kenyan people.
“During the analysis, we examined several key areas, including the committees’ oversight roles and activities, the reports presented in the Senate House, senators’ levels of participation in respective committee meetings, the composition of committee members, teamwork shared with the committee leadership, and the Bills they have sponsored,” the organisation said in a statement.
The report further assessed the societal impact of their legislative initiatives and the consequences that have impacted them. What did Authoritative Global Ranking Analysis assess? Additionally, the analysis has deeply reviewed the critical role in shaping the nation when Standing Committees’ media presence is felt across online platforms and regional and mainstream media.
“This is a clear platform to inform and educate the public about the activities going on.” Critically, the research and analysis further explored the community engagements by the respective Senate committees; it considered evaluating the frequency of field visits attended to, interactions with local communities across the counties, and efforts to gather feedback from the public and the feedback that it has offered.
“Impressively, the report has also highlighted the committees’ involvement in supporting devolution, following closely with county CEOs, mediating conflicts between the county leadership and supporting teams, and providing oversight for struggling counties to create equality and exposing employment imbalance in counties and government institutions such as Parastatals for equality and cohesion,” the statement further reads.
Finally, it assessed the committees’ broader impact on the national stage, offering insights into their governance, public service contributions, and guidance according to the rule of law and constitution.
