Didmus Barasa Pleads with Ruto to Cut Short Burundi Trip, Return Home for Kindiki’s Swearing In

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa and  President William Ruto

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has penned an open letter urging President William Ruto to cut short his trip to Burundi and return to Kenya. MP Didmus Barasa has called on President William Ruto to return to Kenya for Kithure Kindiki’s swearing-in ceremony.  Ruto departed the country on Thursday, October 31, to attend the COMESA summit, aiming to rally support for Raila Odinga’s AUC bid, among other objectives.

Why Didmus Barasa want Ruto to return to Kenya?  In a statement seen by TUKO.co.ke, Barasa told the president that Kithure Kindiki needs to be sworn in to enable him to step into the presidential role during Ruto’s absence.  “William Samoei Ruto, our beloved President, allow me to address you, your excellency sir, with the pronouncement by the three-judge bench that the deputy President assumes your functions as president when you aren’t around, and in recognising that Kithure Kindiki cannot assume those functions because he has not taken the oath of office,” Barasa’s statement read in part. He added that, with no sworn-in deputy president in place, the president should return to the country to preside over Kindiki’s swearing-in ceremony.

“Please could you respectfully get on your plane and return to the country, performing one more important function: modifying the swearing-in of your deputy president to avert any further constitutional crisis,” he added.  What verdict did court give on Kindiki’s swearing-in? Barasa’s statement came moments after the High Court lifted the orders blocking Kindiki from being sworn in as deputy president. During the case proceedings, Gachagua argued that Kindiki’s nomination as DP was illegal. He added that the outgoing Interior Cabinet Secretary was ineligible because he was not a member of the UDA party. The three-judge panel stated that the deputy president’s position cannot remain vacant, thus necessitating Kindiki’s swearing-in.
