Gachagua’s impeachment : National Assembly reveals venues for public participation

Hours after the National Assembly moved the motion to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday, the Clerk of the House has announced areas where Kenyans can visit to give their views on the impeachment.

In an announcement published on the Wednesday dailies, the Clerk stated that the public hearings will be held on Friday, October 4, 2024, across the 47 counties.

“In compliance with Article 118 (1) (b) of the Constitution, the Clerk of the National Assembly invites the public to make oral and/or written submission and representations on the special motion for the impeachment of Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya Rigathi Gachagua, in public hearings to be held on Friday, October 4, 2024, across the country coordinated from the 47 counties from 8 am to 5 pm,” the announcement reads.

In the Coast region, the public hearings will be held in Tononoka Social Hall (Mombasa County), Kwale Cultural Centre (Kwale County), Coast Development Authority Hall, Kilifi (Kilifi County), County Hall, Hola (Tana River County), KCB Hall (Lamu County) and Mwatate CDF Hall (Taita-Taveta County).

In the North-Eastern region, Kenyans will meet at the Government Guest House (Garissa County), ICT Hall, Wajir Town (Wajir County), Mandera Social Hall (Mandera County), Catholic Hall, Marsabit (Marsabit County) and Catholic Diocese Hall, Isiolo (Isiolo County).

Kenyans living in the Eastern region will meet at Kamende Hall (Meru County), Katwana County Hall (Tharaka-Nithi County), IFAD Hall (Embu County), Kitui Multi-Purpose Hall (Kitui County), Machakos Social Hall (Machakos County) and Wote GreenPark Gardens (Makueni County).

In the Central region, the public hearings will be held in Nyandarua CDF Hall, Ol Kalou (Nyandarua County), Nyeri Cultural Hall (Nyeri County), CDF Hall, Kirinyaga Centrl (Kirinyaga County), Murang’a University of Technology Hall (Murang’a County) and Kiambu Social Hall (Kiambu County).

In the Rift Valley region, the meetings will be held in Turkana University (Turkana County), Mteelo County Hall, Kapenguria (West-Pokot County), Maralal Vocational Centre (Samburu County), Kitale Museum (Trans-Nzoia County), County Hall (Uasin Gishu County), KMTC Iten (Elgeyo-Marakwet County) and Eliud Kipchoge Complex (Nandi County).

Further, Kenyans in the region will also be able to meet at Baringo Rehab Centre (Baringo County), NGCDF Hall, Nanyuki (Laikipia County), Kenya Red Cross Hall, Nakuru (Nakuru County), Narok Youth Empowerment Centre (Narok County), Maasai Technical Institute Hall (Kajiado County), ACK Church Hall, Kericho (Kericho County) and St Bakhita Youth Training Hall (Bomet County).

In the Western Region, Kenyans have been directed to meet at Magharibi Hall (Kakamega County), Praise Centre Church Mbale (Vihiga County), Red Cross Hall, Kanduyi (Bungoma County) and Busia Social Hall (Busia County).

In the Nyanza region, public participation will be held at Siaya Technical Institute (Siaya County), Tom Mboya Labour College (Kisumu County), Homa Bay Stadium (Homa Bay County), Migori TTC (Migori County), Agricultural Training College, Kisii (Kisii County) and West Mugirango NGCDF Hall (Nyamira County).

Those in Nairobi will meet at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

Gachagua is facing 11 impeachment grounds including inflammatory and inciteful utterances, undermining national unity, contradicting the president on critical matters, public attacks on judges and gross violation of the constitution.

Other grounds are abusive and insulting words, amassing questionable Sh5.2 billion wealth, insubordination, undermining the president, bullying KEMS officials and failing integrity tests.
