Gachagua urges faithful to pray for Ruto and leaders amid impeachment claims

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday continued to defend himself against plans to impeach him following a suspected fallout with President William Ruto and his allies.

Attending a church service in Meru, Gachagua told those planning to impeach him to respect the will of the people, saying he was elected with Ruto on a joint ticket and therefore should be allowed to complete their 5-year term.

“The will of the people was that we lead them for five years, let us respect that will of the people. Let’s avoid politics of division, politics of hatred,” Gachagua said.

He asked the faithful to pray for the Kenya Kwanza administration and President Ruto so that sanity can prevail in government.

“It is my hope that sanity will prevail, we tone down on politics of division and we work for Kenyans. We were elected two years ago and we have not yet done the work that we promised to do,” Gachagua noted.

The embattled Gachagua faces impeachment in what Ruto’s allies say is a lack of respect for the president and other leaders in government.

National Assembly members are expected to table the impeachment motion against DP Gachagua on Tuesday next week, as reports indicate that the collection of signatures was close to reaching the required mark by Friday evening.

The motion, which must be backed by 117 legislators for it to be introduced in the House, must garner the support of 233 MPs before being transmitted to the Senate.

Gachagua has alleged that his detractors are hell-bent on kicking him out of office, claiming that Members of Parliament are being offered Ksh.5 million to support the impeachment motion.

Speaking to Mwea residents in Kirinyaga County on Saturday, Gachagua revealed that his opposers attempted to bribe county Woman Representative Njeri Maina and Senator James Murango, whom he noted declined in defiance.

He added that such attempts would not deter his bid to fight for the Kenyans who voted him into office.

The DP shifted his focus to his boss calling him to refrain from instigating the impeachment motion.

Gachagua and his allies have accused the president of orchestrating his ouster in the background by pulling the strings of several MPs to push the motion in Parliament.
