Kenya Editors Guild president Zubeidah Kananu shared an emotional tribute to the now-closed KTN News channel, reflecting on its launch and her role in its history. Media personality Zubeidah Kananu reminisces about KTN News’ inception. KTN News, which officially merged with its sister station KTN Home on Wednesday, August 7, was a significant chapter in Kananu’s career. What was Zubeidah’s message about KTN News? In a heartfelt Instagram post, Zubeidah reminisced about the channel’s launch on July 11, 2015, where she had the honour of anchoring the first bulletin—a memory she holds dear. “That day will forever be engraved in my heart. The day we launched KTN News, I had the honour of anchoring the first bulletin. It happened at Tribe-Village Market. I remember very well that I wasn’t supposed to be at the launch; I was called about 3-4 hours before the event,” she wrote. Kananu also recalled how sceptics initially dismissed the channel, joking that only their family members were watching. Despite the doubts, KTN News rose to become one of Kenya’s leading news channels over the past nine years. “Days later, our critics joked that we were being watched by just three people—our family members. 😃 Many doubted us, laughing at the idea of sustaining a 24-hour news channel. Fast forward nine years and KTN News has become one of the top news channels in Kenya.I’ll forever be grateful to God for giving me the opportunity to witness history being written and for being part of the amazing team that wrote that history. KTN News will forever be dear to me, our baby, the platform that made me who I am today,” she continued. Why did Zubeidah call out the government? Separately, Zubeidah called out the government for intimidating journalists who were covering the ongoing protests. The veteran news anchor questioned why the government is afraid of journalists doing their job to inform the public. Many Kenyans celebrated Zubeidah for her boldness.
