City lawyer Steve Ogolla has offered frank advice to President William Ruto in the wake of widespread protests against the Finance Bill. Lawyer Steve Ogolla (l). President William Ruto in a meeting with his France counterpart. Ogolla has advised him to reach out to Raila. Ogolla warned that government responses to the protests appear alarming and unsuitable, given that demonstrators seem determined to persist in expressing their frustrations. In an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, Ogolla urged the President to engage with opposition leader Raila Odinga to help quell the unrest. “This is the right time for the president should reach out to H.E Raila Odinga. His charismatic appeal is capable of restoring order and may work better than a declaration of a State of Emergency,” he said. He also advised Members of Parliament to carefully “read public mood” before making decisions on bills such as the Finance Bill 2024. This comes at a time when the protesters had requested that Raila Odinga refrain from involvement in the demonstrations, citing perceived neglect of their cause. Meanwhile, the Kenya Kwanza lawmakers had approved the bill that the young generation perceived as oppressive.
