Family of Police Officer Swept Away by Flood Urge Gov’t to Intensify Search for His Body

Hero police officer David Chesire Kibet is yet to be found more than a fortnight since he was swept away by floods in Nairobi.  Elizabeth Chesire said he was proud his son died while saving four other people.  Heavy rains that pounded Nairobi and its environs from Sunday, March 24, to Monday, March 25, killed at least four people and displaced many others. Chesire was among three officers who responded to a distress call about three women and a child stuck in their stalls at Country Bus Station in Muthurwa.  Nairobi regional police commander Adamson Bungei confirmed that Chesire and his colleagues had successfully rescued the Kenyans and had returned to help lock the stalls from which they had been rescued. Bungei explained that Chesire was swept away by water after water washed away the remaining bit of the concrete slab. What was Kibet’s last conversation with his family Elizabeth Chesire, the missing police officer’s mother, said his son had a call with his father on the night he died.  She revealed that he was excited on the phone and asked his father to give her the phone after their conversation. Elizabeth revealed that Kibet promised to help her take advantage of the rains and plant early. “They spoke to his father, who was very happy and told me that on Saturday he would come, and we would go to the farm as it had rained,” she said. Kibet later had a long call with his sister before he moved to rescue the four individuals, only to be carried away by the water.
