West Pokot: Calls For Caution As 15-Year-Old Dies In A Mine

Residents in Kacheliba, West Pokot County, have been urged to monitor their children.

This follows an incident where a 15-year-old girl died after the walls of a gold mine caved in on her.

The incident in Alale Ward saw the girl, identified as Nakiru Molenyang’, die in the mine.

Nakiru had gone to fetch firewood alongside her siblings before tragedy struck.

However, a search and rescue operation into the night was futile.

The situation was compounded by heavy rains pounding the region causing floods.

Locals led by Carlos Achodomoi decried lack of prompt action from the authorities.

“Had they responded in good time, we would have saved the girl’s life,” locals lamented.

The body was retrieved on Tuesday night, sending a wave of sadness across the village.

The body was taken to Kariamang’ole Hospital as investigations continue.
