Residents of Olympic Estate in Kibra are decrying a prolonged water shortage that has persisted for more than three years, significantly impacting their daily lives.
Fred Mutua, a long-time resident, expressed frustration, stating, “In the nearly 10 years since we moved to this neighborhood, we have not had consistent water supply. Despite our complaints, the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company has been unresponsive, making our living conditions challenging,“ he said.
Despite Governor Johnson Sakaja’s commitment to providing clean and safe water for all households, Olympic Estate residents say that this promise remains unfulfilled.
Forced to resort to alternative measures, they have been purchasing water from vendors at steep prices.
“We’ve been buying water from vendors who exploit us. The costs are high compared to Nairobi Water Company rates. We question where these vendors source their water whileresidents are left without,” remarked Mutua.
Residents lament that their grievances have fallen on deaf ears. Meanwhile, they continue to receive water bills despite the dry taps.
Alec Okumu expressed frustration, stating, “They claim they’ll return to fix the water problem, but all they do is check the meter. It’s perplexing to check a meter that is functioning while ignoring the water issue.”
In their plea for intervention, residents are urging the county government to take immediate action to resolve the persistent water scarcity issue.
“The water shortage continues to bite, and we haven’t witnessed any sincere efforts to rectify it. We hope to see engineers from the company assess our problem and provide a viable solution,” concluded Mutua.
