13 facts about popular TikToker Truth WatchDog

He was an ordinary man, going about his business in town, hustling to make a coin. However, Kenyans now know him as the Truth Watchdog – the man who looks out for innocent people and exposes scammers.

He shared details about his life on The Trend on Friday, January 19.

Here’s what you need to know about him:

  1. He goes by the name Tony.
  2. His moniker is The Truth Watchdog.
  3. He has a child, a three-year-old, but doesn’t talk much about it.
  4. He has been exposing scams for the last three years.
  5. He used to hustle around the Archives washing and polishing shoes. “I used to wash shoes there with my besties.”
  6. His journey into exposing scams began in an unusual way. He helped a distressed 50-year-old woman who had been conned. “My instinct told me she is in pain, yet people were ignoring her. When I tried to help her, I was threatened.” He spoke about organized crime, gave the woman some bus fare, and told her to leave them alone as they are dangerous. “Even we used to be warned against interfering in their business.”
  7. He gained fame when he recorded a video showing how conmen and police collaborate in town at Archives and later shared it online. “I had been on TikTok for over 2 years with only 200 followers. Then upon posting that video, I did not even do a voiceover, the video hit 90k within 1 hour. I got 17k followers. I thought I had been hacked, so I asked around.” He was nervous and tried to delete the video, failed, and then attempted to delete the account. “The more I am trying, the more the notifications keep on flowing in.” The attention was overwhelming.
  8. He has been forced to disappear several times. He left his shoe shining job and moved to another location. “I was like, weuh hii ni ngori. When I realized that I was running from something that I should actually do, was after two weeks.” He reinstalled his TikTok account, now with 97k followers. “This encouraged him.”
  9. The TikTok videos he shares always go viral. He took another video exposing the same individuals again from another angle. He shared it, gaining him 270k followers.
  10. He disappeared again. “It was strange; you could feel everyone knows you. And this is not good for business for some people.” He alleged detectives began following him. “The good thing with Kahawa Wendani, we live in an environment that is surrounded by police officers, and at the same time, Kahawa Barracks, there are soldiers.”
  11. His first arrest was after the second video.
  12. He went online to study how to conduct investigations. “Like when you start, you have to have a conclusion. Like hapa hakuna doubt.”
  13. He is passionate about the youth.
