Presidential term limit proposal is dead on arrival – Ugenya MP
Ugenya MP David Ochieng’ has said the proposal to extend the Presidential term limit to seven years is dead on arrival.
Speaking in an interview with Citizen TV on Monday, he said this would not be entertained.
"It doesn't matter whether I am in Kenya Kwanza or Azimio; this cannot be entertained. The person thinking of such things is living in the past, a very dark past of this country," Ochieng’ said.
He said anyone imagining that the Constitution can be changed at will should think twice.
"Our Constitution is very progressive, and changing things like term limits requires a referendum. I don't think any Kenyan would support moving term limits from what they are now," he said.
In a submission to the National Dialogue Committee, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei proposed two terms of seven years each for the President.
"The extension of the Presidential term of seven years each term for two terms from the current five years is to allow stability and pragmatic development in the country," he said.
He said the move would enable the President to have a good opportunity to form and establish a formidable team to deliver his manifesto.
