One arrested as detectives recover 2 firearms stolen from GSU camp

Detectives have arrested the main suspect behind an incident where two police firearms mysteriously went missing from a GSU camp in Kopsiro Bungoma county on August 23.

According to a statement shared by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect, Isaac Wanzala, a former GSU officer currently suspended from service for indiscipline sneaked into Korngotuny GSU camp and stole the firearms without being detected.

He was arrested after the detectives launched a comprehensive investigation which led them to him.

The suspect gave the detectives a hard time after he attempted to evade arrest by sneaking into a nearby sugarcane plantation.

At the time, the detectives had raided his home in Mabonge village in Nambale, Busia county at dawn.

He was finally smoked out of his hideout hours after the detectives pitched camp at the plantation.

"A raid was conducted at the suspect’s home today at dawn, prompting the thug to sneak into a nearby sugarcane plantation to evade arrest. But the officers who were determined to arrest him mounted a spirited search that lasted for hours in the vast field of sugarcane and finally smoked him out.

"The thug who appeared not to have forgotten his concealment lessons at the paramilitary unit had utilized the available thick cover of the cane in an attempt to deceive our men, but gave up when the detectives deployed plan B of their operation," DCI said.

Shortly after he was arrested, the suspect led the detectives to the banks of River Sio where they recovered the firearms buried on the ground.

He was then taken into police custody pending arraignment in court.    BY K24 NEWS
