We'll force Ruto to give Kenyans a good deal – Raila
Azimio leader Raila Odinga has given the surest indication that the Kenya Kwanza government is yet to see the best of the opposition's civil disobedience.
In a statement at the Jaramogi Oginga Foundation in Upper Hill where he called off Wednesday's Kamukunji rally, Raila said he will shortly announce a new strategy that will eventually see President William Ruto give in to their demands.
"As Kenyans, we have a duty to liberate ourselves as we have always done. It has never been easy, it will not be easy but it has to be done," he said.
"With unity and commitment, we will force Ruto to give Kenyans a good deal. We will shortly communicate the third wave and the next course of action."
While acknowledging that the pushback against the government is not going to be easy, Raila said the opposition is not going to seat pretty as the President takes the country back to pre-multiparty democracy.
He said the fight for multiparty and the new Constitution was painful, deadly and costly and cannot have been in vain.
Raila accused Ruto of contravening provisions of the supreme law at will including attempts to singlehandedly reconstitute the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
"We did not fight for a new Constitution and multiparty only for Ruto to take us back to the 1980s, Kenyans will not accept. It will be trial by fire many times but we have been through trial by fire before, so we soldier on," he said.
Raila called for civil disobedience against Ruto’s government and accused him of deliberately instituting policy changes meant to hurt Kenyans.
He said the President wants to impose punitive, unfair and unjust taxes on Kenyans without their consent via the impugned Finance Act, of 2023.
“The Finance Act 2023 clearly exposed the fact that our leaders have decided to take instructions from the Executive and the Executive has decided to pursue its own wishes, regardless of what the people feel or say,” he said on Tuesday.
Raila spoke while launching a digital platform to accelerate the collection of 15 million signatures for a petition whose aim is to kick Ruto out of power.
“The process we are engaging in is about the deliberate policy decisions by the Kenya Kwanza regime to make life unbearable to a great majority of Kenyans despite the consistent appeal by Kenyans for the regime to take actions to lessen their burden.
“Both the legislature and the Executive have ganged up against the people, and the people have been left on their own. In return, the people have decided, rightly, to gang up against the Executive and the Legislature,” he said. BY THE STAR
