Omanga calls on Kenyans to resume work as protests continue

 

Former nominated Senator Millicent Omanga has urged Kenyans to go back to their jobs amidst the ongoing anti-government protests.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Omanga assured Kenyans that the government has heightened security to protect people and their businesses.

"Tomorrow (Thursday) report to your respective hustles. We are a hard-working and resilient population. The Government has put in place adequate security measures to protect every life and property," Omanga said.

She added that she will land in Nairobi to support hustlers.

"Kesho tukutane CBD nikisupport mahustler," she said.

Omanga is among the 50 CASs whose jobs are in a limbo following a court directive that declared the appointments illegal.

She had been appointed to the Interior docket held by Kithure Kindiki.

As protests hit day two, there are minimal activities around the Central Business District(CBD).

Many Kenyans have opened up their businesses while some shops are still closed.

Education CS Ezekeil Machogu also ordered schools that were closed in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu to be re-opened.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga reiterated that demonstrations will continue on Thursday till Friday.

In a statement by Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua, she commended the protesters countrywide for turning out on the first day.

"We wish to appeal to the liberators this evening that it is now time for them to retreat to their homes, refresh and recharge in readiness for renewed action tomorrow, Thursday, July 20, 2023- day Two of the 3rd Wave Maandamano," she said. 

Karua however regretted that some of the protesters were injured and others killed.

"We empathise with those whose loved ones have lost lives in the hands of rogue elements in the police service. We also wish those who suffered injuries and are lying in various hospitals across the country, quick recovery," she added. 

However, President William Ruto maintained that picketing using Sufurias will not help in lowering the cost of living.       BY THE STAR
