Arrest Azimio leaders and stop demos, MP Ng'ang'a tells state
Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a wants more Azimio leaders arrested to stop demonstrations slated for this week.
Azimio has already indicated that the countrywide anti-government protests will take place for three consecutive days from Wednesday to Friday.
In a communique, the coalition reviewed the demonstrations calendar to three days due to "overwhelming requests from all sectors of the Kenyan public."
MP Ng’ang’a made the sentiments following the brief arrest of former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya for leading the demonstrations on Wednesday.
He was released hours after the arrest.
Speaking in Thika town, the MP said that the country cannot afford three days of anarchy and destruction of properties by the demonstrators. She urged Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to crack the whip and bring more leaders to book.
“Enough is enough. We are tired of seeing our country being taken to the dogs by these demonstrations that have left a trail of destruction. Let everyone behind the demonstrations be brought to book including their leader Raila Odinga. No one should be spared,” Ng’ang’a said.
The UDA lawmaker raised concerns that should Azimio be let to demonstrate for three consecutive days, the losses the country would suffer would be severe.
“It’s now evident that the anti-government protests are aimed at sabotaging the country’s economy and paint the Kenya Kwanza government as a failed regime. It’s high time the government showed it’s might and protected innocent Kenyans and traders for the sake of the country’s peace and economic stability,” she said.
Ng’ang’a urged President William Ruto to ensure that the demonstrations are quelled so as to protect the country’s global image, saying that the violent demonstrations are scaring away investors.
Azimio leaders and supporters have been holding anti-government protests aimed at forcing the Kenya Kwanza administration to among others lower the cost of living and repeal the Finance Act 2023. BY THE STAR
